With the expensive prices on ink and toner printer cartridge refills, have you ever wondered if it’s more inexpensive to just buy a new printer with the ink or toner already in it than to purchase more cartridges? Studies show that sometimes, it is. Printer companies are notorious for inflating printer ink or toner prices, however there are measures you can take to protect yourself. Taking a look at Consumer Reports, you can identify which companies and brands charge the most for ink and toner, and purchase your printer accordingly.

Though some printers produce a higher quality picture than others, it is also important to ensure you don’t encounter the common ink and toner pitfall.  Check reviews online and even with a store clerk before you buy the one that seems the best.

Being a student is tough. There are so many things to balance. Work, school, family and a boyfriend isn’t easy to manage. That’s why students should really try to simplify their lives. That means cutting out the things that are unnecessary and organizing everything else.

One way to keep your life organized while you’re a student is to make sure you never run supplies. There’s one situation that you’ll hopefully never encounter - running out of toner. Even if it seems expensive at the time; it’s so much better to buy several packs of Canon toner cartridges in advance because you don’t want to run out of toner in the middle of writing a paper.

In a time where prices are rising and the economy is slowing down, it’s great to find savings everywhere you can. Printer ink in the store isn’t cheap, and it can be frustrating to spend hundreds of dollars every year paying for ink or toner cartridges.

But at Web sites you can find ink at much more affordable prices. Discounted Brother, Dell and Epson ink cartridges will save you money over time, and is just as good as the ink you buy in stores. So don’t waste time and gas trying to get to the store, only to be a victim of markup, when you could get the same quality item without ever leaving your home.

Printing at Home

The printer I wanted for Christmas was a bit too expensive, and with the economy how it is, I wasn’t too disappointed when I didn’t get it. However, a friend of the family got a new printer, and ended up giving me their old one! I was a little skeptical because I didn’t know what kind of printer it was, and I really wanted a printer that I could use to print photos from my digital camera. It turns out the hand-me-down printer was an HP!  I was relieved to know it was from a reliable brand, and I also knew from looking at the printer it wasn’t that old.

I was able to print stunning digital photos with my new printer, and all I had to do was purchase new HP toner cartridges. HP has been manufacturing printers for such a long time that finding the toner cartridge was a breeze as well. Though I wasn’t granted my Christmas wish, it all worked out in the end!

Last Minute Printing!

Lexmark ink cartridges

It happened like this; I had been drafting a detailed proposal for a dramatic restructuring to how our financial department worked. In this tough economy, I felt like we were wasting a lot of time using archaic procedures, and work wasn’t being done in an efficient manner. I had my proposal ready to go for a meeting with the managers and directors, I hit the print button, and the black ink warning comes up on the computer screen!  I panicked, because I had no idea where to find more Lexmark ink cartridges in the office, and the meeting was in just a few minutes.

In hindsight, I should have printed out the proposal much earlier, but at that time, I needed to fix the problem in a hurry. I work for a small manufacturing company, so our office isn’t the kind of place you find random office supplies sitting around. I ended up finding an old printer in another part of the office; I yanked out the Lexmark ink cartridge, and brought it back to my computer.  Then I printed with all haste!  Thankfully, it all worked out in the end, and my proposal went over very well!

Finding the Best Ink and Toner

When it comes to purchasing printer ink or toner, you want to find the kind you need, but you also want to be thrifty because as we all know, ink and toner can be expensive.  Finding the best ink or toner deals isn’t always easy in retail stores, but online retailers open up a whole new world for finding ink and toner at discounted prices. While retail stores have to remain in competition with each other, the online marketplace is much vaster, and thus because of the increased competition, prices on products are often lower. However, you do have to worry about shipping costs, but with the small size of ink and toner cartridges and low shipping costs, it’s quite efficient to purchase online.

When shopping online, you can purchase ink or toner from a large retail website, but smaller vendors in general have the best deals because they don’t have to match their prices to a store location. You can even find name brands, like Canon ink cartridges.

The Evolution of Ink

At one time the quill pen was the pinnacle of inking technology.  The quill would have to be dipped in ink again and again after only a few words had been written, tiring out the arm, the hand, and exhausting the mind further.  In the years to come, the fountain pen was invented, which combined the pen and the ink, but suffered from leaking and spotting on the page.  In more modern times, the ball point pen was invented, and followed the type press, or typewriter which was the first widespread mechanical inking instrument.

Modern technology advanced to the extent that now computer printers do almost all of the work and, in general, pens are seldom used except for jotting down notes.  Sales of ink cartridges and laser toner cartridges now dominate the ink market, and down the road, pens might become obsolete all together.

Ink v. Toner

The terms “ink” and “toner” are often used interchangeably, but they are sold as two distinct products. While the two products are both used to create an image, there are some differences. The most obvious disparity is that ink is a liquid while toner is a powder.

Toner has been in use for longer and is essentially a slab a powdered ink which is pulverized to create printed images. Originally toner was poured into a machine through a bottle, but today we have convenient, reusable toner cartridges. Ink cartridges contain liquid ink that is spread on paper through the printing process.

Branded by HP

In the last three months I have ordered two new computers on the internet. I bought the first computer, for myself, from the HP Store, and when my sister needed a new computer as well, I suggested that she look there. Now that I have purchased two computers from the HP online outlet, I am constantly bombarded with promotions from the company.

One item that they seem to be pushing with particularly ardor lately is printers and fax machines. My guess is that sales are slumping due to the economy and more people communicating electronically. I would hate to give into HP’s e-mail marketing, but I could use a new printer and know I would get a great deal on HP ink cartridges.

Lack of Compatibility

With all of the continuous innovation in technology, there are still some basic components that lack compatibility. Perhaps this is a conspiracy between companies to make us buy specialized goods—I don’t know. It does seem odd, however, that companies can’t design video games that can be read by all systems.

The same can be said for power tools and other electronic gadgets: how hard would it be to design a universal battery that transcended manufacturer. One of the most basic examples of this lack of compatibility is printer ink. This aisle at Office Depot contains thousands of products that only work with one or two machines.
