The printer I wanted for Christmas was a bit too expensive, and with the economy how it is, I wasn’t too disappointed when I didn’t get it. However, a friend of the family got a new printer, and ended up giving me their old one! I was a little skeptical because I didn’t know what kind of printer it was, and I really wanted a printer that I could use to print photos from my digital camera. It turns out the hand-me-down printer was an HP!  I was relieved to know it was from a reliable brand, and I also knew from looking at the printer it wasn’t that old.

I was able to print stunning digital photos with my new printer, and all I had to do was purchase new HP toner cartridges. HP has been manufacturing printers for such a long time that finding the toner cartridge was a breeze as well. Though I wasn’t granted my Christmas wish, it all worked out in the end!

In the last three months I have ordered two new computers on the internet. I bought the first computer, for myself, from the HP Store, and when my sister needed a new computer as well, I suggested that she look there. Now that I have purchased two computers from the HP online outlet, I am constantly bombarded with promotions from the company.

One item that they seem to be pushing with particularly ardor lately is printers and fax machines. My guess is that sales are slumping due to the economy and more people communicating electronically. I would hate to give into HP’s e-mail marketing, but I could use a new printer and know I would get a great deal on HP ink cartridges.

Let’s face it, with the dozens of different printer brands, and the hundreds of different printer models, finding the right ink cartridge at a retail store is like finding a needle in a haystack.  The best place to shop for ink cartridges is online, but finding the exact model of the ink cartridge needed can be a chore.  Each printer requires a specific cartridge model, and the best way to find the cartridge needed for your printer is to consult the manual.  If you don’t have the manual, you can also note the model of your printer (often printed on the back) and do an online search.  For example, if you have an HP printer, look underneath it for the model number, then do a search on that model and locate the HP toner cartridges or ink cartridges you need in a simple search.   If you continue to have trouble, try calling the manufacturer of the printer (use this as a last resort). 

Once you’ve found the ink cartridge you need, finding it online is simple.  Locate a website that sells ink or toner, type in the exact cartridge needed, and check the results!  For some popular printers, you can find ink cartridges at retail stores, but locating what you need amongst all the others tends to be a pain.

When purchasing a new computer, whether as a gift or for yourself, there are a few peripherals which are nice to have in addition to the computer.  First of all, a printer is essential for documents and pictures.  Amongst the various printer brands, I would recommend Hewlett Packard for their quality and reputation.  Be sure to buy some HP ink cartridges as well in addition to the printer.  Speaker systems are great for watching movies, listening to music, or chatting over the internet.  If you want to chat over the internet, a microphone is also necessary.  Microphones are manufactured by hundreds of different brands, but most sound about the same if set up correctly. 

Additional peripherals are available, but need would be based on the individual person.  For example, a person interested in home movies, might want video editing software.
